"I found YOGA while I was living in a halfway house for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. I had recently kicked methadone, heroin, and suffered a near fatal bout of alcohol induced pancreatitis that left me unable to eat solid food for a month. It was the most painful thing I’ve experienced. I was 200 pounds, out of shape, and struggling with depression
I’m a musician by trade and was suffering from intense carpal tunnel that felt like electric shocks in my wrist when I played guitar. I was worried my career was over before it started
.
My desire to get healthy led me to the gym almost 2 hours a day. I would hit the treadmill an hour and lift. I never got the results I wanted. I was still in pain
.
I tried the yoga class at that gym. I was awful. I couldn’t touch my toes and I felt anxious the whole time. But after class I felt good. Really good. I gradually stopped doing the gym and focused on yoga. I wanted to keep feeling good, and even though I was over weight and couldn’t touch my toes, I knew with time my body and mind would open up
.
Now I’m a vinyasa, hatha, and rocket teacher and gig regularly with a few different bands. Yoga saved my life and empowered me to live the life I want to live. Without doubtYoga was a central driving force for my recovery 🙏
