From my pre-teen years until my mid-twenties my mental health was poor to say the very least


Meet @piano_yogini London yoga teacher & musical soul, sharing her #yogasavedmylife story with us. These are her words 💚

"Various events throughout childhood till age 21 had an adverse effect on my mental health, yet it wasn't until the age of 24 that I was diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (otherwise known as Borderline Personality Disorder). On the one hand I felt like I had this horrible label slapped on my life forever to follow me around, on the other hand I was relieved to know what was "wrong" with me as I could then find techniques and put systems in place that would set me on a path to wellness

Yoga, CBT, medication, amazing family & friends, my music (my solace) and support networks helped pull me out of an exceedingly dark place, and it's down to Yoga and my own struggles with mental health that inspired me to train as a Yoga Therapist

. 💨 B R E A T H E 💨 .

In the second photo of me, above, you can see I wear this necklace from @triyogauk to remind me to breathe, to take life one breath at a time. The breath is one of the most fundamental techniques used in order to calm the mind and calm the nervous system. •

I can't emphasise enough the power and confidence that yoga has given me due to the nature that it is a self-practiced therapy – the ability to have a hand in healing myself gave me purpose, and a quiet but sure sense of strength

Honestly, if it hadn't been for Yoga, it's unlikely I would have made it to my late 20s, never mind my 30s

.

Mental health doesn't have a particular face. It has many faces. There's no reason for those suffering to be stigmatised, for people to be scared of sufferers or for it to be a death sentence. We NEED to keep an open dialogue on mental health, we NEED to be able to listen to our loved ones, and we NEED to stay aware that mental illness can affect anyone of any age ❤
